Blog Issues:
I am less than a month away from the date my blogware supplier shuts down all the sites. You have to swich over to WordPress or end it all.
I'm finished with the migration to the new platform, but I still have to learn how to manage the theme, banner, columns, archives, font, bla, bla, bla.
For the last ten days, there have been some problems uploading of new photos to illustrate the stories. That's why last week's post was all text.

FARTHER ALONG FEVER FIND OUT WHAT S HAPPENING FINDERS KEEPERS LOSERS WEEPERS
Elvis not only sang to his female co-stars, he also danced with several lucky ones.
Elvis and Mary Ann Mobley in Girl Happy
The first shot is of Elvis and Mary Ann Mobley from the movie Girl Happy. They got into poses like this several times throughout the movie. Every time I see it, I wish Elvis could have ended up with her, rather than Shelly Fabares. Elvis and Mary Ann were two beautiful people, both from Mississippi, and they looked so right together.
Dancing with Shelly Fabares in Girl Happy
Of course, Shelly Fabares was a doll baby, too. Elvis did all right. She also danced around on stage with him during the “I’m Bad.” frolic. Exellent scene.
Yvonne Craig and Elvis in Kissin’ Cousins
Yvonne Craig was in two Elvis movies and had particularly good spark with him on screen in Kissin’ Cousins. The photo of them dancing can be viewed another way. Elvis just kicked a field goal, and she is trying to keep him from slipping down the hill. Try it.
Elvis and Tuesday Weld in Wild in the Country
Although Elvis had three pretty love interests in Wild in the Country, he didn’t end up with any of them at the close of the movie. I wish it could have been Tuesday Weld. In their dancing scene, there was obvious suppressed passion, I thought Tuesday had him hooked right there, but unfortunately, Elvis slipped away and went off to college.
This is from the movie GI Blues. It’s interesting to see Elvis in full soldier uniform doing the jitterbug. In the film, Juliet Prowse had some fabulous outfits with lots of leg showing. I wish she had worn one of them for this shot.
Ann-Margret and Elvis in Viva Las Vegas
If Elvis was hot and sweating after doing this dance scene with Ann-Margret in Viva Las Vegas, could you blame him? And not just from the physical exertion. There was something else going on here. I’ll never get tired of watching this dance.

ANYTHING THAT S PART OF YOU APRON STRINGS ARE YOU LONESOME TO NIGHT? ARE YOU SINCERE
2012 is an election year, and already it has been the catalyst for one article connecting Elvis and politics. Well, now I have found a source that inspires another. It is the text of a 1993 San Francisco Examiner column by Greil Marcus. That name should be familiar to you, because Marcus is the author of two famous Elvis books: Mystery Train (1997) and Dead Elvis.
Elvis Books by Greil Marcus
Marcus reported that during the 1992 Presidential campaign, the press corps started comparing Bill Clinton to Elvis, although the candidate never did this himself. The press even made references to Clinton’s campaign plane as “Air Elvis.”

His opponent, George H W Bush, felt compelled to respond to this linking of Clinton and Elvis, by stating this in a campaign speech:
“Clinton is on all sides of every issue. He’s been spotted more places than Elvis Presley. I guess you’d say his plan really is ‘Elvis Economics’. America will be checking into Heartbreak Hotel.”
Bush didn’t get much traction with these assertions.

In fact, the “Heartbreak Hotel” reference may have worked in Clinton’s favor. Many believe he turned the race around when he wore dark glasses and played the song on the Arsineo Hall Show.

Marcus contended that an Elvis reference in any politician’s campaign speech is a guaranteed sound-bite on the evening news, although there is no guarantee what the public’s response will be. This quote is said to have lost votes for former President Bush in his re-election campaign:
“I finally figured out why Clinton compares himself to Elvis. The minute he takes a stand on something, he starts wiggling.”
The funniest thing in the Marcus column is this quote from noted dull and stiff politician, Al Gore, as he accepted the 1992 vice-presidential nomination at the convention in New York.
“I’ve been dreaming of this moment since I was a kid – that one day I’d have a chance to come here to Madison Square Garden and be the warm-up act for Elvis.”
Yep, that would really get the fans revved up. Dream on, Al.

FOR THE MILLIONTH AND THE LAST TIME FORGET ME NEVER FORT LAUDERDALE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FOUNTAIN OF LOVE
The other day I stood in the supermarket checkout line and spotted the February 6 issue of the tabloid National Enquirer. Lisa Marie and John Travolta were side-by-side on the cover, just above the headline “Divorce Shocker: Whose marriage can be saved. Whose can’t.”
I immediately flashed back to something in my collection of tabloids with Elvis cover stories. However, the issue I remembered wasn’t about him. It was the August 12, 1978 issue of Midnight Globe, and the cover featured Priscilla and John Travolta. The headline reads “Priscilla Presley, Travolta in New Romance.”
So, in the span of 33 years, John Travolta has appeared on tabloid covers with both Elvis’ wife and daughter. Let’s take a look inside and see what’s going on.
First, it should be pointed out that the current magazine does not link Travolta and Lisa together in any kind of divorce shocker. Rather, there are two separate stories about the marital problems each supposedly has going on. In Lisa’s case, some of the problems between her and husband Michael Lockwood are related to different opinions on how to raise their three-year-old twin daughters and to how she keeps him removed from anything to do with the Presley finances.
However, Midnight Globe says the biggest source of stress is Lisa’s relentless determination to restart her singing career. She apparently considers her third album (and first since 2005) to be a do-or-die effort. Lisa is now 44, and she hasn’t had a hit song in seven years, so this might actually be the case. The CD, titled Storm and Grace, comes out on May 1, so we should know pretty soon if her singing career will continue. One way or the other, let’s hope everything works out for Lisa and Michael.
Travolta’s problems stem from the fact that he is an accomplished pilot and has his own airplane and airstrip right at his house. According to National Enquirer, he has recently developed a penchant for taking unannounced flights to Tahiti, Miami, San Juan, Mexico, Central America, and even Bosnia. The good news supposedly is that his wife Kelly Preston had threatened Travolta with divorce if it continued, and he has sworn off his globetrotting ways.
The John Travolta and Priscilla story back in 1978 is much more interesting, and it also includes Lisa Marie. According to Midnight Globe, Elvis’ ten-year-old daughter was a big fan of Vinnie Barbarino, the character Travolta played on the hit TV show Welcome Back Kotter. Lisa knew her mom had Hollywood connections, and talked Priscilla into arranging a visit to the set.
When they got there, Travolta was charming and gracious, and took them to lunch at the studio commissary. Supposedly, there was immediate chemistry between Priscilla and Travolta. At the time the article was published, “sources” reported they had three or four secret dates.
They each had their own reasons for not appearing in public together. Travolta did not want to take any chances of offending his hoard of loyal teeny-bopper fans. Priscilla had a TV special about Elvis in the works and didn’t want any publicity that might distract from it.
Midnight Globe did mention that Priscilla was 33 and Travolta was only 24, but had no mention that either of them considered their age difference any problem. It is interesting that Priscilla had previously experienced the reverse of this. She was only 14 when she came into the life on 24 year-old Elvis.
John Travolta is now 57, and his career continues with meaty roles in movies. It is a safe assumption that his face will again grace the covers of the tabloids. After sharing them with Elvis’ wife and daughter, maybe he will make it a trifecta and share one with Elvis’ granddaughter. If Riley Keough and John Travolta ever appear on the same cover of National Enquirer, I’m buying that one, too.

BLUE CHRISTMAS BLUE EYES CRYING IN THE RAIN BLUE HAWAII BLUE MOON
I received an unexpected e-mail last week. It was from Alfred Wertheimer, the most famous Elvis photographer and an interesting guy. He sent me a joke. Not just me. He had a blast e-mail list of folks he shared the joke with, and I was thrilled he had me on his list.
The message was short:
“All:
Time out for a good old fashioned laugh.
AW”
And, at that point I realized Al had sent me a joke. Cool. Here it is:
Nice little joke.
When I wrote Al back to thank him, I enclosed a photo I found on the internet somewhere and asked if it was one of his. And, if it was, could I post it as well and comment on it. Al not only was nice enough to say yes, he also was nice and sent me a better copy of the photo.

Do you know what Elvis is doing here? If you are familiar with his 1956 TV show appearances, you will recognize this as a shot from the Steve Allen Show. It is from the same night when Elvis wore a tux and sang to a real hound dog. Allen had Elvis in a comedy sketch about coyboys. Here we see him shooting at a dreaded Tonto Bar being pulled across the stage by a wire. The skit was pretty lame, but I love watching it again.
A couple of observations. How do you like that wide belt Elvis is wearing? Maybe a forerunner of things to come. And what’s with the shoes? I asked Alfred why Elvis was wearing white shoes, not cowboy boots, and he said the photo was taken at rehersal. Elvis wore boots for the live broadcast.
Alfred always has plenty of stuff going on -- mostly Elvis related. I keep asking him if I could do a phone interview about his gig as a film photographer at Woodstock. Al was on the Woodstock staff. Talk about being in a situation with amazing opportunities for memorable events. You know Al has to have some good stories to tell, and I’ll be happy just to write about his. Someday, I hope.
For the past two years, Alfred has been involved with the Smithsonian Institution’s touring exhibition “Elvis at Twenty One.”
"Elvis at Twenty-One" features forty of his famous photographs of Elvis, and it opened in January 2008 at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. The exhibition’s three month run at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond just ended. Click here for a great review of this exhibit by Troy Yeary at the Mystery Train Elvis Blog.
During April, May and June, “Elvis at Twenty One” will be presented at the Dwight D Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, Kansas.

BRINGING IT BACK BRITCHES BROWN EYED HANDSOME MAN BURNING LOVE
On February 9, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame made an interesting announcement.
They will enshrine six rock backing-bands from the 50s and early 60s at the 2012 Induction Ceremony on April 14. The bands will join all the previously announced bands and singers in this year’s class, the ones that survived a significant judging competition.
The funny thing is that these old bands got a pass straight into the RockHall. No judging, just picked by committee. I’m fine with their easy ride. The more of these old rockers we can get in there the better.
That committee did have one criterion. Each band had to play behind somebody already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The press release said, “[These] groups should be recognized along with the original lead singer inductee.” This sounds like the powers behind the Hall of Fame realized an earlier mistake, and they are taking a move to fix it. Good for them.
For example, Hank Ballard will no longer be considered a single performer. From now on the name of the Inductee will be Hank Ballard and the Midnighters.
The other bands selected are:
Bill Haley and the Comets
Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps
Buddy Holly and the Crickets
James Brown and the Fabulous Flames
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
I’ll bet the Miracles and their fans have been hounding the hall since 1987, when the Hall put Smokey Robinson in without them. That was wrong and stupid. Congratulations to all the bands. You deserved it.
So, I’m happy about what did happen, but I’m upset about what didn’t happen. The TCB Band has again been ignored. (Ed. note: Lead guitarist, James Burton was inducted in 2001 in the relatively new “Sideman” category.)
ElvisBlog has frequently commented about how the Hall hasn't inducted the other members of the band. Scotty, Bill, and DJ from the Blue Moon Boys have all been in as "Sidemen" since 2009. What's holding up recognition for the TCB guys?
Ronnie Tutt Drums
Glen D Hardin Keyboards
John Wilkinson Ryhthm Guitar
Jerry Scheff Bass
These guys certainly belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But, perhaps they didn’t fit the mold this time. They weren’t a 50s/60s band. And announcers at the performances didn’t regale the entrance of “Elvis and the TCB Band.’
So, it looks like Ronnie, Glen, John and Jerry will have to wait until the Hall adds 70s groups. Or maybe, the Hall could gain some sense and induct them as “Sidemen,” where they belong. And do it soon.
